One person has died and another has been injured in a shooting at a Black Lives Matter rally in the city of Louisville , in the US state of Kentucky, police have reported.
The incident happened Saturday at Jefferson Square Park in downtown Louisville, where protesters have been meeting for weeks to protest the murder of Breona Taylor , an African-American.
Taylor's death in March helped fuel a campaign against racism and police brutality in the United States that erupted with the death of George Floyd , a black man killed by suffocation by a policeman who had just arrested him, and whose cries of "no I can breathe "have become the engine of a campaign against racism that has spread throughout the world.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said he was "deeply saddened by the violence."
Before the shooting, Fischer had urged counter-protesters to stay away from the park, after the local Louisville Courier Journal reported that "armed patriot groups" were planning to confront protesters .
Authorities have not disclosed details of the circumstances of the protester's death at this time.
