Former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has stated that there are governments that regret having recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela in early 2019.

"I do not know if they will say it in public that this reflection is present," Zapatero said when openly questioned about whether there are governments that regret having recognized Guaidó during an interview with the Argentine radio station Radio La Pizarra.

"A year and a half later, the balance situation is clearly negative for any attempt of this nature," he added, referring to Guaidó's recognition. Instead, he stressed, now "silence" is imposed, which is equivalent to "lowering the head" of those who made a mistake supporting Guaidó and specifically mentioned Donald Trump's recent words about his willingness to speak with President Nicolás Maduro.

In addition, Zapatero has predicted that "we will see a Venezuela with more stability" when the dialogue prevails and in that sense he has reproached the "time" that has been taken from Venezuelans by reinforcing "a part" through the international community in instead of promoting a true process of dialogue.

In this sense, he recalled his work as a mediator and stressed that "some of those processes were on the verge of curdling." "Venezuela is a country that at the moment that we give it political, economic and social oxygen will reemerge strongly. It has great potential. Human quality. Many people will return," he said.

As for Argentina, Zapatero has stressed that its new president, Alberto Fernández, "is an authentic, honest and consistent man." "It is a political phenomenon. This perception of Alberto Fernández is in the international political community (...), but he also enjoys significant respect in the United States," he added.

Since 2016, Zapatero has worked as a mediation that has resulted in the release of some political prisoners but that ended in failure in 2018 because the majority of the opposition perceived the Spanish as a figure too prone to the Maduro regime.
