The threshold of 500,000 deaths and 10 million cases of coronavirus was crossed on June 28, 2020. - John Hopkins Hospital

On January 9, China reported the first death from mysterious pneumonia. Six months later, the coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 500,000 people worldwide, according to a count by the American hospital John Hopkins published on Sunday. At the same time, the threshold of 10 million infections has been crossed, and there are undoubtedly many more cases - up to ten times more, according to expert estimates. With infections exploding in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East, and the risk of new clusters in China and Europe, the pandemic is far from being under control, warned the WHO.

The United States is the most bereaved country in the world, with nearly 130,000 deaths. In total, the Covid-19 pandemic killed nearly 200,000 in Europe (mainly in the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Spain), 200,000 on the American continent (mainly in the USA, Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Chile) .

America, the new center of the pandemic

The number of cases reported worldwide has doubled since May 21 and more than a million new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the past 6 days alone. 94 days had passed between the announcement of the first case in China and the identification of a million infections worldwide.

Latin America and the Caribbean are still the fastest growing part of the world, with more than 400,000 new cases in a week. Brazil (1,313,667 cases including 246,088 new in the last seven days), Peru (275,989, 24,651 new), Chile (267,766, 31,018), Mexico (212.802, 37,600 new) and Colombia (88,592, 22,959 new ) are the most affected.

The United States crossed 2.5 million cases on Saturday. Contagion is increasing in 30 of the 50 states, particularly in the largest and most populated in the south and west: California, Texas and Florida. Several have co-operated on deconfinement, notably with the closing of bars in Texas.

Asia seems to see an increase in the number of daily cases of Covid-19, now driven by the sustained spread of the disease in India (528,859 cases including 118,398 in the last seven days), Pakistan (202,955, 26,338 new) and Bangladesh (137,787, 25,481 new). On the African continent, South Africa is worrying, with a rate per million inhabitants higher than that of the United States.

Fear of a second wave in Europe

In Europe, the number of new infections identified daily has stabilized for more than a month at less than 20,000 new cases reported each day, but WHO is concerned about an acceleration of contamination in eleven countries in the region. Ukraine notably recorded 1,109 cases on Friday, a record described by the authorities as a "serious wave".

This week in Germany, more than 600,000 residents of two cantons were reconfigured Tuesday after the outbreak of contamination in a slaughterhouse, in the wake of a partial reinstatement of restrictions in the Lisbon region, which raises concerns for the tourist season in Portugal. In England, Leicester is likely to become the first city to be imposed restriction measures due to a local resurgence of the virus. Finally, in China, the emergence of some 300 new cases in Beijing in just over two weeks is fueling fears. The world battle continues.
