To separate his two fighting dogs, he had found no other way than to shoot one of them with a rifle. A 55-year-old fisherman was tried on Thursday before the Quimper criminal court for cruelty to an animal, reports Le Télégramme . The facts took place on July 14, 2019 in the town of Plobannalec-Lesconil in Finistère.

Fairly tipsy, with a rate of 2.70 grams of alcohol in the blood, the man had shot the animal, a boxer that he had adopted shortly before at the SPA. Seriously affected in the spinal cord, the dog was left dying by the family of the fifties. Finally taken to veterinary emergencies, he was euthanized.

Animals living in deplorable conditions

The arrest of the individual had been hectic, the latter having taken refuge in his toilet. Present at the time of the events, his son had also handed over to the gendarmes all the weapons his father had, namely a baseball bat, a saber, a machete, a brass knuckles, a rifle and about fifty cartridges.

The SPA had filed a complaint against the fisherman who also owned goats, sheep, parakeets and geese who lived in deplorable conditions. Furious at having his animals removed, the accused had threatened to kill SPA employees this fall. The court sentenced him to three months suspended prison sentence with a ban on keeping animals for two years. He will also have to reimburse nearly 7,000 euros at the SPA.
