Magnus Alsiok is part of the Flakabergs group in Gällivare forest sameby. This night, they had a herd inside an old logging garden located about seven miles north of Råneå. This was also a special night for Magnus Alsiok as he now had his wife Emelie Alsiok and the couple's two children Tyra, three and Signe, one year, with him during the calf marking. Despite the fact that his girls are small, they have still managed to get their own reins.

- It feels great to be able to pass on this legacy. And precisely the brand of Tire, she has inherited from her grandfather, my father. And she got Signe's mark from my grandfather. These are brands that have been around for a long time in the family, says Magnus Alsiok.

Hard to find bait

It was a tough winter for the reindeer. Gentle temperatures and precipitation and then cold degrees on it produced an ice armor that settled on the ground. This made a grazing animal like the reindeer extremely difficult to find food.

- Many of those we have not supported have aborted their calves to cope with their own lives. But you also see many ropes that have calf and then you become terribly happy when they have succeeded in managing the calf, he says.

Predator

He is also pleased that they can still see relatively many calves:

- It's significantly better than last year. But we have not been directly spoiled with good numbers because the predator pressure has been so severe for several years, says Magnus Alsiok.
