The views on water-skiing along the Vättern beaches and on Munksjön in central Jönköping are sharp. In early June, a water scooter collided with a competition rudder on Munksjön and since then the criticism has escalated.

- It is pure wild west, anyone can drive in Munksjön or at Vättern. Some of the watercraft riders like high speed and since there is no speed limit, it becomes like a huge playground for them. I am absolutely convinced that there will be a serious accident shortly if nothing is done, says Paul Buckley, chairman of Jönköping's rowing company.

Hard to interpret rules

But the rules around jet skiing are strenuous. According to Swedish law, you can only drive in the fairway between Gränna and Visingsö, as well as in a specially designated area north of Gränna.

But at the same time, the EU says that there must be free trade of goods within the European Union. In order for manufacturers of watercraft to sell their products, it should be okay to drive in more places than Swedish law says. This is a matter to be decided by the European Court of Justice and it may take several years before it becomes clear.

Can be fined by police

The County Administrative Board of Jönköping has decided that no motor vehicle may be driven within a hundred meters of the beach in Vättern. In addition, the police can fine people who behave inappropriately on the lake.

At present, the police in Jönköping do not have a boat themselves but must rely on the fact that the maritime police in Gothenburg can come and help them if needed.

- This is a relatively new phenomenon and we are reviewing our operations to see if any boat is needed here in Jönköping. After all, we have managed to this day and hopefully until the next summer we have managed the national resource from the maritime police, says Tobias Åkerberg at the police.

But Paul Buckley does not agree with this.

- When the water charts are out, it is important to act immediately if it is a dangerous situation, then you can not wait for the Gothenburg police.
