Thursday, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron installed the executive assessment mission on the management of the coronavirus crisis. While in the National Assembly, parliamentarians are already conducting an investigation, the Élysée wants a less political, more technical report, with a more international perspective.

Emmanuel Macron installed the executive assessment mission on Thursday to manage the coronavirus crisis. Chaired by the Swiss professor Didier Pittet, it will have to deliver its conclusions by the end of the year, announced the Élysée. A decision that annoyed the opposition, which considers that it may hinder the work of the National Assembly's investigation committee underway. But what exactly will it be used for?

Who is composing it?

Among the five members who make it up is therefore Professor Pittet, received by Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, infectious disease doctor and epidemiologist, 63 years old and based in Switzerland where he works at the university hospitals of Geneva and at the World Health Organization. The mission also includes Raoul Briet, former President of the Court of Auditors, Laurence Boone, Chief Economist of the OECD, Anne-Marie Moulin, Emeritus Research Director at the CNRS and Pierre Parneix, Public Health Doctor at the CHU de Bordeaux .

"This is not a second opinion from the parliamentary inquiry"

When the Élysée Palace announced its intention to carry out its own investigation into the coronavirus, the revolt was general, notably within the National Assembly, where parliamentarians are also carrying out an investigation, for which they notably received Professor Didier Raoult Wednesday. In the entourage of the President, there is talk of a complementary initiative. "This is not a second opinion from the parliamentary inquiry," swears an adviser.

However, the Élysée wants a less political, more technical report, with a more international perspective. "We need feedback to prepare for new pandemics," said a relative of the President.

This is why this audit will be carried out by five experts. They can interview the people they want, in France or abroad. A first report is awaited by the Élysée next October, with an idea in mind, summed up by an Élysée collaborator: "If there were to be a rebound in the epidemic, this mission would be able to observe in real time and correct.
