The Portuguese government announced a strengthening of confinement in the Lisbon region to control the outbreaks of the new coronavirus, Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced yesterday .

These measures include the prohibition of meetings of more than ten people, when the limit had been increased to 20 across the country, as well as the closure of cafes and shops starting at 8:00 p.m. local.

"Certain measures will be applied throughout the Lisbon metropolitan region," said the head of government at a press conference, after meeting with the mayors of the five most affected municipalities.

"The core of the problem lies in 15 districts of these municipalities," he added, specifying that the new measures and their geographical application will be detailed in an extraordinary ministerial council, which will take place at night.

According to official data compiled by local media, between May 21 and June 21, 9,221 new cases of covid-19 were detected in Portugal, of which 85% in the Lisbon and river valley regions Block. About half of these new cases were located in the communes of Lisbon, Sintra, Odivelas, Loures and Amadora.

"The Lisbon region continues to focus our attention and efforts," declared the Secretary of State for Health, Antonio Lacerda Sales, while it was announced that the Portuguese capital will host the last phase of the European Football Champions League in August.
