An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale shook southern Mexico on Tuesday morning, according to the National Seismological Service, followed by a tsunami alert in Central America. The epicenter of this earthquake, which it is not yet known whether it caused casualties, is located in the coastal locality of Crucecita, in the state of Oaxaca, on the peaceful side, the institute said. It has been felt in several districts of the capital Mexico.

A tsunami alert was triggered in Central America following the earthquake, according to an American seismological institute. Many Mexicans, alerted by the siren that sounded in Mexico City, immediately took to the streets.

This earthquake intervenes in the middle of the Covid-19 crisis. Many people in Mexico City did not have time to put on a mask when they left their house in a hurry. "We currently have no information about possible damage," said David Leon, Mexico's civil protection official, who met with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, according to the daily Milenio .

The last major earthquake in Mexico dates back to September 2017. It had shaken Mexico City and the states near Morelo and Puebla where the epicenter was located, killing 370 people.
