(Fighting against New Crown Pneumonia) Polls show that Chinese Canadians have been hit by the "shadow epidemic" of racism

China News Agency, Toronto, June 22 (Reporter Yu Ruidong) A survey released by the Canadian polling agency on June 22 showed that Chinese Canadians are suffering from the impact of racism under the new crown epidemic.

The survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute in collaboration with the University of Alberta showed that half of the respondents said they had been abused or insulted because of the new crown epidemic, and 43% said they had been threatened or Intimidation.

According to Canadian media reports, verbal threats against Chinese or Asians, graffiti or destruction of buildings, and even personal attacks have recently occurred in many places in Canada.

30% said that since the outbreak, they have often been harassed by racist graffiti or related social media information. 29% believe that they are often seen as a threat to the health and safety of others. About half of them worry that Asian children will be bullied by the epidemic when they return to school.

61% of the respondents said they adjusted their daily behaviors to avoid conflicts or other unpleasant encounters. At the same time, 64% of people think that the reports of North American news media have led to a negative perception of Chinese in Canada.

The survey covered 516 Chinese Canadians. 44% of the respondents were born in Canada, and 22% each came from Mainland China and Hong Kong.

As the only Chinese minister in the Canadian federal government, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade Wu Fengyi said in a statement that the situation reflected in the investigation report was shocking, and the racism known as the "shadow epidemic" also made I feel the same. This reminds people once again that racism is real and has a devastating impact on people’s lives every day. She said that Chinese Canadians have been making valuable contributions to society, economy and community. Chinese Canadians should be proud and share their stories more.

Wu Fengyi emphasized that people need to work together to overcome the "shadow epidemic" of racism. "We must stand together, support each other, and take action to fight against discrimination against Asian Canadians, as well as black Canadians, indigenous peoples and other races. Systemic racism."
