Italian beaches are crowded. Too much ? - Marilla Sicilia / Mondadori Portfo / SIPA

A poorly successful screening application, wearing a mask at half mast and barrier gestures on the way out… No, we are not talking about France, even if the resemblance is striking, but Italy, where the medical authorities sound the alarm about the dangers of a second wave of coronavirus. They note the general relaxation of the population which no longer seems to be afraid of contagion.

"We cannot rule out a new wave in the fall," warned Massimo Galli, an infectious disease specialist at Sacco Hospital in Milan, interviewed by La Repubblica. For him, it is still "too early" to leave surgical masks at home.

The mask requirement removed?

Close festive aperitifs, crowded beaches, restaurants with little regard for the mandatory standards for distancing customers, the anxiety-provoking atmosphere of confinement seems to have been forgotten by part of the population. The sale of masks - not found at the start of confinement - is now falling in Italy, according to the Federation of Pharmacists.

The obligation to wear outdoor masks, in force in some regions such as Lombardy (north), should disappear at the end of the month, a decision considered "premature" by Massimo Galli.

All clusters lead to Rome

Lombardy, the epicenter of the epidemic in the country, posted another 143 new cases on Monday in twenty-four hours. To date, the virus has killed 34,657 people across the peninsula, and the figures for daily contamination remain stable.

At the end of last week, however, the health authorities called for "caution", after observing "warning signals linked to the transmission" of the Covid-19, including two outbreaks in Rome, stressing that "the circulation of virus is still important. "

An effort that should not be wasted

"Let us remain cautious until the arrival of a vaccine," pleads Franco Locatelli, a doctor who chairs the Superior Council of Health and advises the government, in the newspaper Corriere della Sera.

"Italy has made a huge effort and has achieved extraordinary results," he says. "But do not make them vain with unconscionable behavior, like" movida "" because "we must honor the memory of the 34,000 victims," he insisted.

The rest of the world worried

The alarming situation outside Europe must be on everyone's mind, he notes. "People move from one continent to another and it is impossible to control everyone," warns Franco Locatelli.

Few Italians finally downloaded the national application to track positive cases on their mobile phones (only 3.5 million compared to the 23 million users expected).

A serological survey on a representative sample of 150,000 Italians has so far been unsuccessful: only a third of the people contacted have agreed to participate at this stage.
