A crowd of people gathered this afternoon in Ciutadella (Menorca) to celebrate the Sant Joan festivals in an improvised way, since the official events were suspended by the City Council due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Local Police sources have confirmed to Europa Press that around 3 pm there has been a concentration of people in the old town, on Calle Mayor del Borne .
The participants have performed a first 'toc de fabiol' , a generally massive event during these festivities. They have not been evicted by the police, but have spontaneously dispersed .
From the Local Police they have considered "an unconsciousness" the attitude of these people, since the majority did not wear a mask and the safety distances were not being respected either . However, from the body they have pointed out that it has been something "exceptional" that has lasted "a short time".
The Local Police have received many calls from neighbors "outraged" by this activity.
The City Council canceled the official acts, since it is not possible to celebrate popular festivals in the Balearic Islands until July. As an alternative, he proposed virtual activities with the motto 'Sant Joan es viu al cor' .
In an emergency statement this afternoon, the consistory has asked that the hygiene rules and the mandatory use of the mask on public roads and in closed spaces be complied with as long as the interpersonal distance is less than one and a half meters.
The City Council has recalled the "suffering of many people during the pandemic, they have been very hard months. Let's do it well and enjoy the feeling sensibly ."
