For several years, reindeer herders in the country have testified about problems that arise when the climate changes. Impaired winter grazing for the reindeer is one of them. When the temperature oscillates around zero, ice forms in the ground and the reindeer do not access the grazing.

- It gets warmer in the winters. It thaws and freezes and becomes ice, says Jon Ailo Sparrok, 24, in Ammarnäs who chose to invest as a reindeer herder after high school.

When the lichen freezes inside, the reindeer are forced to support the animals. It is an expensive story - and extra job for the attendants.

Different winters today

Several of the reindeer herding Sami who meet SVT in Ammarnäs testify that winter looks different today compared to when they were young.

- Then it was cooler and more stable winters. Today, it almost never gets as cold as -30, says Jonas Andersson in Ammarnäs.

Marja Skum that we meet in Tjulträsk notice the same phenomenon.

- There have always been bad winters for reindeer herding. They used to say that they could come every seventh to every ten years. Now we haven't had a good one since maybe 2011, ”she says.
