Three people from the same family died in the Lauriers fire in Marseille - BMPM

A 14-year-old boy was indicted after the fire that claimed the lives of three people from the same family in a building in Marseille, the prosecutor's office announced on Saturday.

The minor, unknown to the police, had been referred for "deliberate destruction by fire resulting in death". He was indicted "in accordance with the requisitions of the prosecution" but placed under judicial supervision, when the public prosecutor requested his pre-trial detention.

The hearings of several adolescents had shed light on the conditions for the start of the fire that occurred last Sunday, shortly after 6 p.m. in a 13-storey building in the city of Lauriers in the 13th arrondissement of Marseille.

They notably highlighted "the fact that one of them, aged 14, had deliberately set fire to certain parts" of a sofa located in the common areas upstairs, "which had then triggered a very significant propagation of flames, "had detailed Friday in a statement the prosecutor of Marseille Dominique Laurens.

An 11-year-old girl and her grandmother died Sunday evening in the fire. The severely burned mother died on Tuesday. Five other people had been taken care of by the firefighters and 32 people, including 11 children, relocated in an emergency.
