Alejandro Amenábar (48) told the world that he was gay in 2004. In the midst of promoting one of his masterpieces, Mar Adentro , the film that earned him an Oscar, the director wanted to be honest with himself, as well as with others . He has always pointed out the importance of public figures being brave so that other people find in their example the strength to accept themselves. When he confessed, on the cover of Shangay magazine , it was a bombshell . In its day the impact was similar to that of this week with Pablo Alborán. The Chilean-born filmmaker is immersed in the pre-production of the adaptation of the comic The Treasure of the Black Swan, a series that will mean landing on the small screen. His latest film, While the War Lasts , released in the prepandemia, was a box office success and earned more than 12 million euros. Talk to LOC in this Pride special to give your insight on the LGTBIQ + movement and its remaining conquests.

My best friend, Adrián, told me that he realized he was gay when he was 11 years old. His classmates commented on how "good" Claudia Schiffer was in a car ad. He, however, felt nothing. And he asked himself questions. In your case, how was it? I think, like many people, I had certainty since I was a child. But I was slow to accept the reality, I suppose that due to my own prejudices and the hostile environment towards gays, not necessarily at home with my parents, but at school with my classmates. How do you usually celebrate Gay Pride? If you are in Madrid, do you go to the demonstration? I usually go to the demonstration almost every year. What I never miss is a walk through Chueca. Madrid is one of the most vital cities in the world, and during Pride there is an explosion of joy. Do you think that in the LGTBIQ + movement, as well as in feminism, the important thing is to include and make it transversal and not point out who is "good "or" bad "homosexual? Of course. The words "inclusion" and "cross" always sound good to me. That said, when someone is inconsistent or directly hypocritical about the conquest of social rights, such as some politicians who often seem to forget what they voted or promoted in their day, I think it is good to point it out and remind people of it. forced homosexuals in addition to being, "seem", that is, to follow a certain canon that establishes the mainstream of the movement? Here nobody forces anything, that's what it is about. What does it mean to appear homosexual? The desirable thing would be to end stereotypes. In their case, for example, they always point out that there is no LGTBIQ + presence in their cinema. Tired of justifying yourself? No, and I have never felt that anyone asked me for explanations or pressured me. Fortunately, I have always been able to tell the stories that I wanted, and if one day I can think of one that is especially focused on LGTBIQ + themes, of course I will tell it. able to get to the bottom of that debate. I only know that I had the pleasure of getting to know La Susi, from Nancys Rubias, and I have no doubt that she was a woman. In any case, when talking about such important laws, I bet on serene debate and not on disqualifications and online harassment, wherever they come from. You think that Culture in general and cinema in particular have intensified their role in the inclusion of gender diversity, sexual orientation, etc. It is clear that it is. And in this sense, Pedro Almodóvar led the way in this country. Will Culture also be a balm for the times so polarized and noisy that we live as a result of the pandemic? In fact it already is. What have people done during confinement but resort to reading, movies, series ...? And it will be key not only as a reflection of the hard times that are coming, but as a necessary tool to reflect and improve. What would you say to those who say that homophobia does not exist or that there should be hetero pride? I would ask them if they know someone in the world that just because of his hetero status is being persecuted, threatened or executed. What are your LGTBIQ + references? In real life, in the cinema, series ... An important reference in my life has always been Carlos Montero, classmate and creator of series such as Physics or Chemistry or Elite, very focused on LGTBQ + themes. He never had a problem in publicly assuming his orientation and he was already walking around Chueca when many gay bars and pubs still had curtains on the windows. Do you plan to make an autobiographical movie at some point? What about the pandemic and its consequences? I believe that the pandemic will inevitably mark us and will be the trigger for major changes in society, I hope for the better. In my case, it is still too early to know if I feel like talking about it cinematically. Deep down, we would all like to erase these days as a bad dream ... As for the autobiographical film, of course each one carries his story and sometimes he wants to share it ... But for some reason I always end up telling those of others.

PERSONAL LIFE

The director of Los Otros has always tried to preserve his private life. However, he has not chosen to "hide" his relationships either. She married in 2015 with David Blanco, financial consultant from whom she divorced in 2019. In the presentation of While the war lasts , last September during the San Sebastián festival, Amenábar's ex-husband shared some images in which he appeared alongside he. The photograph also featured a young doctor from Toledo with whom he is romantically linked. At the moment, the filmmaker has not commented on the existence of this relationship, which would have started in 2018.
