  • Communities at risk: Coronavirus punishes minorities in the UK and the US

The economy is tightening and Boris Johnson is aware that the UK cannot continue to lag behind. While in the rest of Europe the 'new normal' is already practically a reality, the British will not begin to enjoy it, according to information published this Saturday by the newspaper 'The Times', until next July 4. Despite the fact that the country registered more than 1,300 new cases and 173 deaths from coronavirus yesterday , the 'premier' insists that the disease is "diluting" and, at the beginning of next week, will officially announce the scenario it will present the country in the coming months.

The first measure, aimed at recovering the arrival of tourists , will be to replace the mandatory quarantine with an RT-PCR test at the same airport, and, although the airlines have received the news with optimism, the truth is that it raises several questions. Firstly, because the results, at best, would not arrive until after seven hours, and, secondly, because this could discourage many visitors who prefer not to risk spending their holidays locked away. Even so, it seems that so-called 'safe air bridges' could be agreed with countries with less severe infection rates soon after announcing yesterday that the alert level for the pandemic was lowered from four to three.

Regarding day-to-day life, one of the first measures that could reach the country would be the suppression, or relaxation, of social distancing , which would allow more people in businesses and therefore greater economic activity. In fact, the Government is planning a "fresh revolution", that is, allowing any pub, bar or restaurant to be automatically licensed to sell alcohol to their customers so that they can consume it on the street.

Patrols on the terraces

That is why, more than ever, the United Kingdom will have to look at its skies, because a good part of the revival goes through a sunny summer , although at the moment concerts, parades and gatherings such as carnival will not be allowed Notting Hill, which each year brings together over a million people on the streets of London.

While, inside the pubs, the pints may have to be ordered with the mobile phone, the capacity will be limited and the waiters may have to disinfect much of the premises every hour. To guarantee compliance with these measures, the police will patrol the terraces and their surroundings, but for the moment it is not clear whether economic sanctions are being considered for violators.

For their part, restaurants must also adapt to this 'new normal' by offering disposable menus , delivering cutlery next to food and even serving individual portions of spices such as salt or pepper to avoid indirect contact between different customers. The buffets, meanwhile, are still without a date for reopening, while the hotels must increase their social distance. In the event that one of the guests falls ill, they must quarantine there and, once recovered, that room cannot be used again until 72 hours later.

The clubs, far from returning

Meanwhile, the clubs seem out of the equation this summer, and it is that "it is too complicated to ensure that social distance is respected on the dance floors", although the possibility of forcing customers to wash their hands and take temperature before entering the premises. Gyms and spas, which could return on July 4th, will have strict capacity limitations and higher standards of cleanliness.

Meanwhile, and in what seems like it could be a constant in several sectors, theme parks and recreational areas will ask for early entry to control capacity, while playgrounds, some cinemas and outdoor gyms are still without a date for the reopening.
