June 20, 2020 On the occasion of World Refugee Day, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella leaves a message about our country's commitment to strengthening it, thanks also to joint action with Europe.

"The phenomenon of migration relies on an Italian approach based on important instruments such as the national resettlement program and humanitarian corridors for particularly vulnerable refugees. Our protection and assistance action cannot deflect or weaken but must, indeed, be strengthened with the elaboration of a new course of the European Union on migration and asylum, in the sign of a more incisive and shared common commitment ".

"The impact of the pandemic - underlines the Head of State - exacerbates even more the critical condition of those who, due to conflicts or for the violation of fundamental rights, are forced to flee their country. Italy shows continuously and with sense of responsibility his closeness to those who face these dramatic events, offering welcome and protection.

"Our active participation in the first Global Refugee Forum is a concrete testimony".

For the President of the Republic, "the phenomenon of migration counts on a Italian approach based on important tools such as the national resettlement program and humanitarian corridors for particularly vulnerable refugees, lacking the state protection of the country of origin and severely affected by the restrictions caused by the current health emergency ".

The Head of State therefore addresses "a heartfelt thanks to the women and men of the police and State administrations and all operators who provide the services necessary to guarantee international protection to those who have the right ".

"In this effort - concludes Mattarella - the international organizations also stand out, and especially the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, to whom Italy ensures maximum support in line with its historic multilateral vocation".
