THE ESSENTIAL

  • The epidemic continues to decline in France. There are now fewer than 10,000 people hospitalized for Covid-19. More than 30,000 places were occupied at the worst of the crisis in early April.
  • At the same time the government confirms the new stage of deconfinement. The cinemas will reopen on Monday but, and this is new, we now know that the stadiums will reopen on July 11, within the limit of 5,000 seats.
  • In the rest of the world, 8.6 million people have been affected by the disease. Now including more than a million in Brazil, the second most affected country after the United States.

8h36: Brazil continues its crazy race

Brazil crossed the barrier of one million cases of coronavirus contamination on Friday. Before Brazil, only the United States had passed this symbolic threshold of a million cases. The Latin American giant will also likely cross the 50,000 mark after reaching 48,954 deaths on Friday, becoming the second country where the Covid-19 kills the most in the world.

Since the beginning of June, Brazil, the new global epicenter of the pandemic, has recorded more new infections (518,000) and deaths (19,000) than any other country in the world, according to an AFP compilation.

8:24 am: Ticket offices open

The French will be able to return to the cinema and the casino from Monday and at the stadium from July 11: the government has announced an acceleration of deconfinement for the summer thanks to progress in the fight against the Covid-19 epidemic. Cinemas, holiday centers, casinos and game rooms will therefore reopen from June 22 "in compliance with strict health rules," said a statement from the Defense and National Security Council (CDSN), meeting Friday under the authority of President Emmanuel Macron.

The government has also authorized the resumption of collective sports activities from Monday "with appropriate prevention measures". Combat sports, however, remain prohibited. Then, on July 11, the stadiums and racetracks will be reopened to the public, with a “maximum tonnage” of 5,000 people. As for theaters, activities bringing together more than 1,500 people must be declared beforehand.
