• Coronavirus. New Zealand 'militarizes' its quarantines.

A New Zealand police officer has died and another is seriously injured after being shot this Friday during a routine traffic check in Auckland, as the country's police chief has reported. Police are now looking for a suspect who escaped.

The surrounding schools and day centers have been closed while police comb the area in search of the shooter , who also injured a passer-by in his car flight.

The two officers were unarmed, a common practice in New Zealand, where only airport authorities or technical response units carry pistols.

Police Chief Andrew Coster did not elaborate on the reasons that prompted officers to order the vehicle's arrest.

This is the first time in at least a decade that a police officer has died on duty in the country, where firearm crimes are relatively rare.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has described the event as devastating. "Losing a police officer is losing someone who cares for all of us, but is also a family member, a loved one, and a friend," Ardern said in a statement.

New Zealand has tightened its weapons law twice since a man shot dead 51 Muslims last year , in the worst mass shooting in the country.
