“In connection with the ongoing speculation on the alleged consent of the family of Sergei Zakharov to accept monetary compensation from Mikhail Efremov, I again turned today to the widow of the deceased and his brother to clarify their decision on this issue,” he said.

Dobrovinsky noted that Margarita and Valery Zakharov did not change their decision: “compensation is not needed, an exceptionally fair court is needed.”

Earlier, Efremov, who was under house arrest, recorded a video message asking for forgiveness from Zakharov’s relatives and declaring his readiness to help his family.

Later, the lawyer of the family of the deceased stated that Zakharov’s relatives did not accept Efremov’s apology and refused monetary compensation. According to him, they intend to achieve a fair court decision.

On the evening of June 8, a car driven by Efremov drove into the oncoming lane on Smolenskaya Square in the center of Moscow and crashed into a van, which Zakharov was driving.

As a result of the incident, the driver of the van Sergey Zakharov died in the hospital. An examination established that Efremov was drunk.
