The number of people fleeing war, starvation and disasters continues to increase. Since 2010, the number has almost doubled. It shows the annual report "Global trends" from the UN refugee agency UNHCR.

At the end of last year, there were about 79.5 million people forced to leave their homes - which is the highest figure ever recorded. More than 30 million of the refugees are estimated to be children, according to the UNHCR.

"A Changed Reality"

In the report, they state that it is becoming increasingly difficult for people on the run to return home quickly or to remedy the situation in other ways.

"We are witnessing a changed reality where forced displacement is not only much more widespread at present, but is also no longer a short-lived or temporary phenomenon," UN Refugee Commissioner Filippo Grandi said in a press release.
