The evidence of coronavirus that for weeks makes the Canary Islands Government to all migrants rescued off its coast have revealed that in the last patera arrival in Fuerteventura there are 14 positive , as confirmed to Efe sources of the Ministry of Health .

Until now, this sanitary control had emerged sporadic contagions , from one to two cases per boat, despite the fact that these boats usually reach the islands with between 25 and 50 people -sometimes more- who sail together and very close, in crossings that usually last from one to four days (depending on the point of departure).

The 14 infections diagnosed this Wednesday correspond all to the tests that were carried out on the 39 people rescued this Sunday by Maritime Rescue when they were trying to reach the coast of Fuerteventura in an inflatable boat with which they had gone to sea from El Aaiún for 24 hours. before.

In his last appearance in the Canary Islands Parliament to answer a question on this matter, on June 9, the Health Minister, Julio Pérez , had asked not to be alarmists regarding the risk of spreading the covid-19 that may represent they kicked them, because until then only 10 infections had been detected among their occupants and about 20 among agents of the security forces who have intervened in services related to this matter.

In addition, the mandatory 14-day quarantine that the State decreed for anyone arriving from abroad at a Spanish airport is also being applied to boats.

The first positive case of immigrants arriving by boat to Fuerteventura was diagnosed on June 5, it came from a boat that arrived two days earlier at the port of Gran Tarajal with 59 people on board .

In the last weeks, the cheese ship, owned by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, has been used as a space to house immigrants to spend the 14-day quarantine.

The lack of reception spaces for immigrants in Fuerteventura since the route to the Canary Islands was reactivated in 2019 has worsened in recent weeks due to the need for additional enclosures where they can be put to quarantine.

In these circumstances, immigrants have been quarantined in fighting fields, such as the one in Puerto del Rosario and Tetir , or in a student residence in the capital, where 15 women and one man are staying with their minor son.

Organizations such as Misión Cristiana Moderna , the entity that together with the Red Cross welcomes immigrants in Fuerteventura, denounced a few days ago that it was "on the edge" and called for "a greater commitment from the central government."

The president of the Fuerteventura Council, Blas Acosta , has called a press conference for this Thursday, at 9.00 in the morning, to announce the latest data on coronavirus infections after the island had been without any active case for weeks about to start receiving foreign tourists.

Acosta had already shown his discomfort with the central government due to the situation of the immigrants who have arrived in Fuerteventura in recent weeks and has come to request the reopening of the CIE in El Matorral, closed years ago.
