The Foreign Ministry summoned the Turkish ambassador to Baghdad, Fateh Yildiz, again - after being summoned last Sunday - to its headquarters and handed him a "strongly worded protest note calling for the cessation of provocative actions."

Tiger Claw Operation

The Turkish Ministry of Defense confirmed the continuation of the military "Tiger Claw" operation carried out by the Special Forces with air and artillery support against PKK positions in various regions in northern Iraq, starting from the Haftanin area.

Military sources said that Turkish F-16 fighters, drones and artillery destroyed more than 500 PKK sites as part of an operation in the Haftanin area since the operation began on Wednesday in response to what it said was the increasing attacks by Kurdish fighters on Turkish army bases on the border between The two countries.

A senior Turkish official, who asked not to be named, said that his country intends to establish more temporary military bases in northern Iraq after it intensified its strikes on Kurdish fighters there, adding that these efforts will ensure border security.

After talks with Iraq

The Turkish official stated that his country started operations after talks with the Iraqi authorities in order to remove the fighters from its borders and target the PKK forces and their logistical capabilities.

He added that the plan is to establish temporary bases in the region to prevent the use of purified areas for the same purpose again, noting that there are already more than ten temporary bases there, and new rules will be established.

On the other hand, analysts said that the Turkish operation would not have taken place without the tacit approval of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Ambassador Yildiz said after the first call that he informed Iraqi officials that Ankara will continue its movement against "terrorism" as long as Baghdad does not interfere to expel the PKK.

The PKK, classified as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984. More than 40,000 people were killed in the conflict, which is concentrated in southeastern Turkey.

Turkey regularly attacks the party's fighters, whether in the mainly Kurdish southeast, or in northern Iraq, where they are based, and warned in recent years of a possible ground attack on the party's bases in the Jebel Qandil region in Iraq.

Iranian artillery bombing

On the other hand, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry today also summoned the Iranian ambassador to Baghdad, Erige Masjedi, and delivered a memorandum of protest against the Iranian artillery shelling that hit border villages in the Erbil governorate on Tuesday, and the material losses and property damage it caused, in addition to spreading fear among the safe residents of those areas. .

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry affirmed - in a statement through its account on the social networking site "Twitter" today - the concern to maintain and develop historical relations between the two countries.

Respect for sovereignty

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry stressed the condemnation of these actions, and the importance of the Iranian side's keenness on respecting sovereignty, stopping the carrying out of such actions, and exploring ways of joint bilateral cooperation in controlling security and stabilizing the common borders.

The Iranian artillery shelled the Alan Heights, affiliated to the city of Haji Omran in the Erbil Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, on Tuesday.

Iran usually also targets sites of the "PJAK" party and the Iranian Kurdistani Democrat, in an attempt to eliminate Kurdish opponents.
