The purpose is to promote biodiversity and preserve habitats.

- Many plant species and animal species are dependent on the occasional burning in the forest. Conservation of nature will therefore benefit the diversity of the island, says Annika Forsslund, nature conservation officer at the county administrative board, in a statement.

Nature conservation burning is part of Gotska Sandön's new management plan and requires careful planning. The burning will take place in stages within a roughly 30 hectare forest area surrounded by forest roads. The outer boundary will be secured with a fire hose and the forest next to the burning area will be watered in connection with the burning.
