At LKAB's assignment, the company Ecogain has developed a vision for how the mining area will be restored on the day the mining operations are discontinued. A vision for ecological landscaping.

According to LKAB, the focus of the vision is to promote reindeer husbandry, biodiversity and to create natural environments that mimic those found in the landscape surrounding the place.

Large area

"The reason we have developed this vision is that we want to leave something to future generations that are good and plan for it already," says Linda Bjurholt, environmental and work environment manager at LKAB.

LKAB's mining operations in Kiruna today comprise an area of approximately 3,000 hectares (corresponding to approximately 4200 football pitches), with open pit, landfills and sand storage.
