In Sainte-Croix, September 11, 2017 - A wolf in Sainte-Croix park, in Moselle. - Gilles Durand / 20 Minutes

A wolf caught in a trap ... photo. We thought about it, it's now confirmed. The wolf and lynx network of the Bas-Rhin department photographed a wolf in the Champ du feu massif sector. The animal has been present there since at least May 2020.

A photo trap set up in June as part of the departmental wolf and lynx observatory: bingo! "A large wolf-like carnivore" was photographed on June 12 at 5.54 am in the town of Belmont.

Investigations were therefore carried out to confirm the presence of the wolf by experts from the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB). The latter exploited the photos of a second photo trap placed in the town near Belfosse. These photos which confirmed the passage of a wolf on May 6, then May 20.

Additional investigations

Attacks in which the wolf's responsibility had not been dismissed had occurred on domestic herds on May 28 and August 6, 2019 in Ranrupt, on July 8 and 9 and on September 27, 2019 in Belmont and on the night of 10 to October 11, 2019 in Bourg Bruche. The breeders concerned had been compensated by the departmental management of the Bas-Rhin territories (DDT).

Additional investigations are underway to determine if the animal photographed can correspond to the wolf already present in this sector of the Champ du feu massif in 2019 or if it is another animal.

The wolf and the lynx are strictly protected species in France and in Europe. Their presence should not dissuade from walking in the forest, says the prefecture. In case of wolf sightings or indications of its presence, do not hesitate to quickly contact an OFB agent at 03.88.70.48.59 or on the website of the French Office for Biodiversity.
