Lille: An opera (but not the cake) in a pastry shop - 20 Minutes

The coronavirus will not have spared anyone. In Lille, the Meert pastry shop, a local institution famous for its waffles filled with vanilla, closed for two months and lost no less than two and a half million euros in turnover. So, to turn the page and find a smile when the place reopens to the public, Thierry Landron had an original idea.

“I had always dreamed of doing a concert in these inspiring places steeped in history [Meert has existed since 1761]. Associating gluttony with baroque music was an old project. The opportunity presented itself and it was the right time with the deconfinement ”, explains the director of Meert.

A repertoire adapted to the history of the place

In association with Hello Lille, the attractiveness agency of the Lille metropolis, the pastry shop has therefore decided to record a baroque concert in different places of the shop. For this grand premiere, Il Buranello, a baroque ensemble from the region, was invited. And who has a repertoire that matches the history of the place.

“Meert was created at the end of the 17th century and we play music from that time. It is interesting to see what people of that time listened to as a style of music. Even if we think it a little learned, it is music that touches people, "explains Stéphanie Révillon, the creator of the ensemble. The concert will be broadcast on Sunday, June 21, Music Day, on the Facebook pages of Meert and Hello Lille.
