The ministers are expected to discuss the situation in the Middle East with an emphasis on the state of affairs in Syria, as well as the possibility of organizing a summit of the Astana troika on Syria.

Zarif became one of the first high-ranking foreign guests in Moscow after the pandemic, negotiations with which Lavrov holds in person. 

In April, it was reported that the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran and Turkey Sergey Lavrov, Mohammad Javad Zarif and Mevlut Cavusoglu held a telephone conference.
