During the recent Black Lives Matter demos, statues of historical figures have been vandalized. Instead, in American social media, Susanna Arwin's statue - with her purse as a weapon - known as the "purse aunt" has been highlighted as a favorite.

- I am definitely not for vandalism but I can understand why. The liquid aunt, which is a symbol of civilian curation, is probably needed today, says Susanna Arwin to SVT.

Symbol of civil remedy

The statue is inspired by a photograph of Hans Runesson taken in 1985 during a Nazi demonstration in Växjö. The work depicting an elderly lady banging her handbag against a demonstrator has been disputed and both Växjö and Varberg Municipality have previously refused it.

The debate about the liquid aunt got so hot that Susanna Arwin eventually chose to leave Åby north of Växjö. Today, she lives and works instead at Värmdö outside Stockholm.
