Creation of a new cycling development near the boulevards in Bordeaux - Mickaël Bosredon / 20 Minutes

  • Bordeaux Métropole installed this Monday the 36th development of this bicycle emergency plan which provides for a hundred.
  • Of the 80 new km of development, 25 will be made in Bordeaux alone, and in particular on the boulevards.
  • If they were to be provisional at first, elected officials would wish to perpetuate some.

Bordeaux Métropole is continuing to roll out its bicycle emergency plan. This Monday, metropolitan agents deployed the 36th bicycle development, of the hundred that this plan has, in Bouscat, the city of the president of the metropolis Patrick Bobet. On 850 meters, avenue du Président-Schuman, cyclists can now go up this axis from the boulevards, the artery therefore passing in two-way cycling.

Not yet used to these changes, motorists are still cheerfully biting on the new flowerbeds for cyclists. Which has the gift of annoying the president of the metropolis. “I am burned down by certain motorists who now remain blocked for two or three minutes at certain crossings, but I assume. I am convinced that the car must be constrained for more sharing with bikes and pedestrians. And the more cyclists there are, the more motorists will understand the value of making these new developments. We hope that at the start of the school year, high school students, young dynamic executives, will take their bikes to get around. It's a call: we make pedaling easier, use the equipment! And if it is relevant, some of these adjustments will remain. "

Long-term development on the boulevards?

"There are certainly two or three points of congestion, especially between the Ornano barrier and the Pessac barrier, where motorists growl a little, recognizes for his part the mayor of Bordeaux Nicolas Florian. But spending a few more minutes in your car, if that allows you to have a secure soft mobility, that goes in the right direction. People are ready for change. And intraboulevards, they will have to get into the habit of having gentle mobility. "

All the news on deconfinement

Decided at the end of confinement, to allow those who do not wish to resume public transport to move other than by car, the bicycle emergency plan, supposed to be provisional at first, must be deployed by month of August 80 km of new cycling facilities across the city, including 25 km in Bordeaux. Some 15 km have already been completed, particularly on the boulevards. "These developments must prefigure what will be the boulevards" launched on Monday the mayor of Bordeaux Nicolas Florian, who hopes that at this location they will be sustainable. "We are giving ourselves at least three months of reflection," continues Patrick Bobet, "we have to let the summer pass, and we'll see when school starts. "

"The problem is that you are protected for 500 m then the development stops"

The first counts on the boulevards have shown that when one of the two traffic lanes is entirely reserved for buses and bikes, "we are 50/50 in terms of people transported" assures Patrick Bobet. In other words, there are as many people on buses and bikes as there are in cars, "because of the large number of autosolistes." Figures that go more towards the objective that the metropolis aims for.

Problem: all boulevards could not be treated in this way, and there are still many passages with two lanes for cars, and a very small cycle lane for bikes ... "We had to operate effectively by sections, and the problem is that you are protected for 500 meters then the development stops and you are again grazed by cars, it's a bit complicated, recognizes Patrick Bobet. But I understood that where we cannot entirely delete a queue for cars, we could at least reduce the two traffic queues, to widen the cycle lane of the boulevards a little. "

The improvements will therefore continue throughout the summer. At the Bordeaux level, Nicolas Florian announced that he will now have to create a new route going to Bègles and Villenave d'Ornon, certainly via the Cours de la Somme, and another towards the north, via Cours Portal and Verdun.
