A British army F15 fighter plane based in the United Kingdom crashed Monday morning in the North Sea during a "routine training mission" with a pilot on board, the fate of which remains unknown, a said the U.S. military.

"The cause of the crash, as well as the status of the pilot, are unknown at this time," the US Air Force said in a statement.
