Chinese media reported that the virus was detected on the market on cutting boards used for imported salmon, noting that supermarkets had removed their stocks of salmon.
The Beijing authorities have ordered a food safety check at the city level, with a focus on fresh and frozen meat, poultry and fish in supermarkets, warehouses and catering services.
"People feel intimidated," a vegetable seller in another market in central Beijing told AFP. "The meat sellers were forced to close their stores, and this disease is really scary," said the man, named San.
The city authorities closed nine schools and kindergartens near Shenfadi, suspended sports and group dining events, and visits by tourist groups in the provinces in an attempt to stem the spread of the virus.
