• Covid-19. Argentina hopes with its success against the coronavirus, but the data raises doubts

The arrival of the Covid-19 in the environment of the Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, put the country on alert this Friday at a time when the rate of infection is accelerating.

Fernández, who appeared in public on several occasions in recent weeks without a mask and without keeping the safety distance, had to cancel a tour of provinces bordering Chile halfway when he learned the possibility that one of his ministers had been infected the virus.

"The risk of contagion exists," said Fernández in the La Rioja province, explaining why he would not travel to neighboring Catamarca. The fact that Martín Insaurralde, mayor of the populous municipality of Lomas de Zamora, bordering the city of Buenos Aires, was infected by Covid, alerted the presidential delegation. The communal chief had been two days ago with Daniel Arroyo, minister of Social Development and part this Friday of Fernández's entourage on his tours of the provinces.

"We have already separated Daniel Arroyo from the group, " the president explained in a recorded video before heading back to Buenos Aires. Argentina is entering winter, and the Buenos Aires metropolitan area maintains a strict quarantine that began on March 20 and will last for several more weeks. Compared to neighbors such as Brazil and Chile, Covid's case numbers in Argentina are lower, although they are growing steadily in recent days.

The Argentine government did not confirm whether it plans to subject the president to controls to find out if he became infected with the virus. "No communications are made unless there is something to communicate," said the Argentine presidency when asked by EL MUNDO.

There is an important fact in the news of the suspension of the visit of the Argentine president to Catamarca: two weeks ago, Fernández visited Formosa, bordering Paraguay and, until then, one of the two Argentine provinces (there are 24 in total) to which the virus had not arrived. Formosa reported 26 cases this Friday, and although there is no evidence that a relationship exists, the visit in which Fernández exhibited without a mask and hugged the governor, Gildo Insfrán, returned to memory. The president would apologize days later for those images.

Thus, Catamarca was installed as the only Argentine province without cases of Covid-19. "Traveling there would have been irresponsible," the TN news channel said today.
