French justice authorized a researcher Friday to consult the archives of the late President François Mitterrand on Rwanda, at the heart of the controversy over the role of France during the 1994 genocide.

In 2015, François Hollande had promised to open them before the end of 2016, without follow-up. Finally, a researcher was authorized by the French administrative justice to consult the archives of the former President of the Republic, François Mitterrand on Rwanda concerning the genocide of Tutsis in Rwanda.

The Council of State, the highest administrative court in France, believes that researcher François Graner has "a legitimate interest in consulting these archives to feed his historical research and thus inform the debate on a question of public interest".
