  • To date and since the opening of the system in early June, the city has received 109 requests for pedestrianization of streets.
  • If traders and restaurateurs are responsible for mounting their files, they must then take care of the installation on site, including barriers.
  • Anne Hidalgo (PS) and David Belliard (EELV), candidates for mayor of Paris whose lists merged for the second round, want these "adjustments to become final".

After the enlarged and ephemeral terraces installed on parking spaces in the four corners of Paris since June 2, the street pedestrianization system, promised by Anne Hidalgo, is also becoming concrete. While the declarations of extension of the terrace can indeed be supplemented by "a request for temporary pedestrianization of the lane", we say at the town hall, four streets of the capital have just obtained this green light for a life without car.

Quincampoix, Fontaines-du-Temple and de Montmorency streets in the 3rd arrondissement and Biot street in the 17th can now close the street or part of the artery, Monday to Sunday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. A first. And for good reason, in Paris and its region, the area most affected by the coronavirus, only the terraces can currently accommodate customers. But these terraces are now larger or even new. With a few conditions.

"It is not a question of extending the terraces on the pavement"

This request for pedestrianization of the street, a portion of the street, a section or a dead end must come from one or more restaurateurs and merchants. The file with a specific regulation proposal adapted to the street must notably include the list of traders concerned, a closing / opening device allowing pedestrianization and access to emergency vehicles. But also on closing days and times, a cleanliness system and a street development plan. The project must then be sent to demande-pietonisation@paris.fr to be examined by the Paris town hall and the district town hall. "We look if it is playable, if this street can be pedestrianized," says one in town hall. For which concrete installations upon arrival?

"This pedestrianization essentially aims to calm traffic in streets with terraces and to free up traffic space for pedestrians, it is not a question of extending the terraces on the pavement which must be left free of at least a way for the passage of emergency vehicles. The temporary development proposal must in all cases ensure respect for the good circulation of pedestrians and among them the most fragile, the cleanliness, tranquility and security of public space, ”it says. at the town hall, requested by 20 Minutes .

To date and since the opening of the system in early June, the city has received 109 requests for pedestrianization of streets. Note that if traders and restaurateurs must take care of mounting their file, they must then take care of the installation on site. "You have to provide the barrier equipment to close your street," said one at the town hall.

Perennial "temporary"?

This extension of terraces and pedestrianization of streets is planned until September 30, 2020. In addition, the city hall of Paris had received a week ago more than 2,500 declarations of extension of terraces from the establishment who must in return display a charter on their storefront. And now, other streets should become pedestrian. For what future? Can we imagine these enlarged, ephemeral terraces and these “temporary” pedestrian areas to be part of the future? "It would be my dream", replied last week to 20 Minutes , Marcel Benezet, president of the coffee, bar and brewery branch of the GNI-Synhorcat. "In any case, it will be an opportunity to reflect, but it will be necessary to see with the associations of residents," he adds. Anne Hidalgo, candidate for her own succession, suggests a future on this subject, soon two weeks into the second round.

In a column published this Thursday on the  JDD , Anne Hidalgo (PS) and David Belliard (EELV) ensure that "ecology is, more than ever, the foundation" of their common project. In this letter, they highlight in particular the evolutions of their city of tomorrow and the future of recent transformations. "The crisis has allowed us to carry out rapid transformations, with new pedestrian streets, widened sidewalks, cycle paths: all these developments are already acclaimed and we want them to become final," they announced in this tribune.
