Residents of a Mayotte village slowed down the intervention of firefighters, who came to rescue a wounded man (illustration). - Elisa Frisullo / 20 Minutes

This new obstacle worries the Regional Health Agency. Fifty residents of the village of Mtsahara in the north of Mayotte on Tuesday prevented the intervention of firefighters who came to rescue an injured person deposited by a kwassa kwassa, a light boat coming from the Comoros.

This is the second obstruction action carried out in a few days by villagers against foreign sick or injured people.

Two facts in a few days

On the day of the incident, the firefighters had to negotiate long minutes with the villagers before they could evacuate the man plastered in the leg towards the dispensary in the neighboring commune of Dzoumogné. The injured man was then evacuated to the Mayotte hospital center (CHM) in Mamoudzou. Residents justified their gesture by explaining that they were tired of seeing migrants arrive illegally in Mayotte for treatment, considering that this makes access to healthcare more difficult for them.

On Saturday in Kani Bé, other people prevented the ambulance transporting a traumatized man in a traffic accident in the Comoros from accessing the CHM helicopter. The latter had to land 7 km away to evacuate it.

ARS "deeply deplores these facts"

In a press release, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) "deeply deplores these facts and recalls that France does not tolerate any discrimination in access to care. Every patient, whatever their social situation, has the right to be treated. This is the mission entrusted to the public hospital in France. "

For years, thousands of people, mainly Comorians, but also nationals of Africa of the Great Lakes, have left the neighboring island of Anjouan to return clandestinely to Mayotte. But these arrivals meet an increasingly hostile attitude from the locals.
