A chest filled with gold nuggets and precious stones, hidden ten years ago by a millionaire in the Rocky Mountains of the American West, was finally found after a quest that obsessed thousands of enthusiasts, sometimes risking their lives.

"The treasure has been found," Forrest Fenn, a wealthy art dealer in the state of New Mexico, who had hidden the fabulous 20-pound cassette in 2010, announced in a specialized blog.

The millionaire had written a convoluted poem which, attached to a map, was intended to locate the treasure. An enigma that has plagued some Americans beyond reason.

The trunk "was under the starry canopy, in the lush forest vegetation of the Rocky Mountains, and had not moved from where I had hidden it more than ten years ago," wrote Mr. Fenn in this press release published this weekend.

Four deaths

"I don't know who found it, but the poem in my book guided it," said the 89-year-old.

The trunk was supposed to contain a fortune exceeding two million dollars, in the form of diamonds, emeralds and gold coins in particular.

The eccentric millionaire estimates that around 350,000 Indiana Jones apprentices have been on the trail of his treasure during the decade, some going so far as to quit their jobs to devote themselves to research.

At least four people accidentally died in this haunting quest in a huge region, the Rocky Mountains stretching more than 3,000 kilometers.
