The town of Houston is preparing for the funeral of George Floyd, killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis. A death that has become a symbol of police violence and racism around the world. Monday, thousands of people marched in front of his coffin, to pay him a last tribute. Europe 1 was there.

His death has become a symbol of police violence and racism in the United States. Thousands of people marched past the open coffin of George Floyd, who died under the knee of a white policeman, at a church in Houston, Texas on Monday. His funeral, in small groups, will take place this Tuesday at 6 p.m. French time. The face of the African American father was peaceful in the golden coffin padded with blue. Still unknown two weeks ago, it is now spread on walls and t-shirts, everywhere in the United States but also in the world.

A symbol in front of which thousands of people parade in silence. Some have come from afar, like Jason who drove 5 hours to pay homage to George Floyd. "I did not only see George in this coffin, he said in tears, I saw my son, my brothers, myself, my sisters".

"You will be the last George"

"You'll be the last George," Rose promised, meditating in front of the coffin. "I will do everything I can for that". In the queue, some compare this historic moment to the death of Martin Luther King, murdered in 1968.

Cynthia, she did not hesitate to come with her son of only 9 years old. "He must understand that it is a matter of life and death," she said, trembling. "I already explain to him how to behave with the police". "I want to be free, I don't want to be suffocated by a police officer," breathes the little boy, looking up at his mother. On his t-shirt, a message: "I too am America".
