  • The health crisis linked to the coronavirus should favor tourism in France during the next weekends and this summer.
  • To inspire you a bit for your vacation, "20 Minutes" has chosen five hikes or bicycle tours to explore around Montpellier.

Montpellier, its beaches, but also its wilderness in the hinterland ... Hérault is a paradise for nature lovers, looking both at the Mediterranean and the mountains. So why not go get away in the region? 20 Minutes has selected five ideas from its innumerable hiking trails or its 2,400 km of marked trails dedicated to mountain biking.

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. A magical place, the most visited in Hérault, from where many hiking trails start. The 10 km of the Infernet loop starts from rue du Bout du Monde. They offer a superb view of the Hérault gorges, the mountains of the hinterland and the Mediterranean rim. The Fenestrelles laces were made by the monks of Gellone Abbey to reach the plateau where their animals grazed.

Saint-Félix-de-Montceau. From the ruins of the abbey which overlook Gigean, this walk is very accessible, including with the family. Its elevation is low and the landscapes, ponds, Mediterranean, scrubland are revealed in turn for two and a half hours. It can also be done on mountain bikes.

The cit'art hike. 12 km on foot or by mountain bike through the Gardiole massif at the gates of Montpellier, to combine the pleasure of walking, nature and art. The department has entrusted its seven fire tanks to street artists. They each had carte blanche to decorate them according to their fertile imagination.

The oenorandos . In order to enhance its wine, cultural and natural heritage, the department has labeled 17 circuits through the vines. In Villeneuve-lès-Béziers, the one located between "Canal du Midi and vineyards" allows you to discover over 10 km the structure imagined by Paul Riquet. And relive part of the history of viticulture: While Béziers was the world capital of wine in terms of quantities produced, millions of hectoliters of wine passed through this channel.

A green way. This secure cycle route, carried out on the old railway line which linked Bédarieux to Mazamet, lends itself to family outings in the Haut Languedoc regional natural park. From the magnificent village of Olargues to the cave of the Fileuse de Verre in Courniou, passing by the Héric gorges, the landscapes are breathtaking. The 50 km walk - 80 km if you loop a loop that crosses the Tarn - can be interspersed with visits to museums.
