After several months of traffic around the globe, the Covid-19 has killed more than 400,000 worldwide, including more than 110,000 in the United States, according to a latest report on Sunday. The situation is particularly worrying in Latin America, while in Europe life is beginning to reclaim its rights.

The coronavirus pandemic crossed the threshold of 400,000 deaths worldwide on Sunday, continuing to make rapid progress in Latin American countries. Sunday, Pope Francis, born in Buenos Aires, worried about the crisis on his continent of origin. "Unfortunately (...) in Latin America, the virus continues to claim many victims", he deplored, expressing his compassion "to these populations, the sick and their families, and to all those who take it care".

Worrisome situation in South America

The spread of the virus has in fact accelerated in Latin America: in Peru, the second most affected country on the continent behind Brazil, the hospital system is on the verge of collapse, in particular due to the lack of oxygen. This did not prevent the announcement of the reopening of the Inca site of Machu Picchu for July 1.

Chile, meanwhile, corrected its death toll from coronavirus victims on Sunday, adding 653 deaths in March and April. This brings the death toll to 2,290. The South American country has also recorded records in the past 24 hours, with 96 deaths and 6,405 contaminations.

Over 110,000 dead in the United States

In the United States, where the new coronavirus has killed the most, 691 additional people have died in the last 24 hours, according to a report on Sunday by Johns Hopkins University, against 3,000 deaths per day at the height of the crisis . This brings the total number of Covid-19 deaths in the United States to 110,482, where 1,938,842 cases have been reported. In Brazil, the third most bereaved country in the world with more than 35,000 dead, behind the United States and the United Kingdom, the governor of Rio de Janeiro however announced the relaxation from Saturday of containment measures.

Restrictions lifted in Europe

In Europe and in North Africa, life also takes back its rights. The lifting of restrictions continued on Saturday in France, where the epidemic is now "controlled", according to health authorities. Thirteen deaths were recorded in French hospitals on Sunday, the lowest balance since mid-March. Spain, which has successfully brought the virus under control in recent weeks, has registered 27,000 deaths, according to the latest figures.

On the other hand, the United Kingdom only lifts the restrictions drop by drop. The government announced on Sunday that places of worship would reopen on June 15, but only for "individual prayer", as well as non-essential businesses. The country, with a total of 40,542 deaths, has the second heaviest death toll in the world, after the United States. According to several comparative studies, it has the highest excess mortality in the world compared to its population.
