American protests against the killing of George Florid opposite the White House and American cities to demand justice are continuing, at a time when the first police trial session accused of killing Floyd is being held, amidst the opinions of a segment that considers the country out of control.

Despite the easing of the security presence in the vicinity of the White House, forces of the National Guard are still deployed in the streets of the American capital.

US President Donald Trump had said earlier that he had ordered the start of the withdrawal of National Guard forces from the capital.

In New York, huge protest marches roamed the city streets to condemn the killing of George Floyd, one day after the city's mayor, Bill de Plazio, decided to end the curfew.

And in Los Angeles, California, a massive protest march came out to condemn the killing of Floyd and the police behavior that the protesters considered to be in breach of the constitution.

The protesters flocked to the city's Hollywood neighborhood, at the invitation of activists from the Black Life Mission.

The first session

Today the hearing regarding the case of police officer Derek Chauvin, who killed George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25, has sparked protests.

Chauvin faces a second-degree murder charge, which carries a prison sentence of 20 years.

Most Minneapolis city council members had pledged to dismantle the city's police department and create a new system of public safety in the city.

Nine of the 12-member council signed a pledge to start dismantling the police station, saying it was beyond repair.

The move reflects calls to rethink the role of the police, and to transfer some of the money and responsibilities assigned to it to social services agencies.

In light of the latest developments in the United States, a new opinion poll conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, whose results were published on Sunday, showed that 80% of Americans say that matters in their country are out of control.

The poll, conducted between May 28 and June 2, revealed a party split, with 92% of Democrats believing that the country is out of control compared to 66% of Republicans, while only 15% of those surveyed believe that matters are under control.

The poll was conducted after protests erupted across the United States, condemning the killing of Floyd and against the backdrop of the Corona pandemic that has killed more than 100,000 Americans, as well as causing millions to lose their jobs.

59% said they were more concerned about police practices and Floyd’s death, while 27% said they were more concerned about the protests that turned into devastating acts.

Participants were divided on a partisan basis, with 81% of Democratic voters saying they were more concerned about Floyd’s death, while 29% of Republicans voted.

External protests

In the British capital, London, demonstrations took place for the second consecutive day in solidarity with protesters in the United States, and condemned the killing of George Floyd and against what they described as racism in the whole world.

The police clashed with protesters who tried to approach the government headquarters, and arrested a number of them.

For his part, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the riots spoiled the demonstrations, and pledged to hold those responsible to account.

In Brussels, the Belgian police arrested a number of people following riots that erupted in the wake of the end of an anti-racist demonstration called by human rights movements, to protest against the killing of Floyd at the hands of the American police.

The confrontations erupted after demonstrators threw bottles and stones at the security forces, and they vandalized the windows of some shops and looted their contents.
