The main information to remember:

  • The latest assessment of Covid-19 in France, published Friday, reports 29,142 deaths

29,142 dead in France

The number of Covid-19-related deaths has increased by 31 in hospitals in the past 24 hours in France, according to the government website on Saturday, bringing the total, with Ehpad, to 29,142 since the start of the epidemic. The number of people hospitalized in intensive care because of this disease continued to decline, with 35 fewer patients, to 1,059, according to this assessment based on data from Public Health France.

These figures were posted online on the government website, while the Directorate General of Health (DGS) said on Friday that it would not publish a new report over the weekend.

No Mother's Day in some Ehpad

Like every year, Mother's Day is an opportunity for children to make a gesture to their mother. The little ones had to use their imagination, for lack of school to guide them, in order to make a small gift. But Mother's Day will not be honored everywhere: although the conditions of visits have been relaxed since Friday within the nursing homes, some establishments cannot ensure the good performance of the health protocol which remains strict despite everything and therefore have decided to do so renounce. This is particularly the case in Saint-Ouen, where Europe 1 went.

StopCovid passes the million user mark

The French contact tracing application against the StopCovid coronavirus "has passed the milestone of one million users," Secretary of State for Digital Cédric O said on Saturday morning. The effectiveness of the smartphone application depends on the number of people who use it, even if the government considers it useful "from the first downloads".

StopCovid allows its users to be warned if they have encountered another user infected with coronavirus in the past two weeks. The alert is triggered if the smartphones of the two people have crossed within a meter, for more than 15 minutes.

Dramatic situation in Brazil, more than 397,000 deaths worldwide

The days pass and Brazil plunges a little more into a dramatic situation. The South American giant is now the third country in the world with the most deaths linked to the new coronavirus, surpassing 34,000 dead deaths. Experts believe, however, that official figures are largely underestimated.

Despite this context, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro threatened to leave the World Health Organization. "Either the WHO works without ideological bias, or we leave it too. We don't need outsiders to give their feelings about health here," he said.

In total, the pandemic has killed at least 397,179 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to an assessment established by AFP from official sources on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. GMT. The United States remains the most affected country in terms of both death and case numbers (109,497 deaths per 1,908,235 cases). Then come the United Kingdom with 40,465 dead, Brazil, Italy (33,846 dead) and France (29,111 dead).
