India recorded a new record jump in infections of the emerging coronavirus (Covid-19), amounting to about 10 thousand cases within one day, to replace Spain in the fifth place in the world in terms of the total number of infections, according to government data published yesterday. The rise in casualties comes as India begins today to reopen shopping centers, restaurants, hotels and places of worship, with restrictions on large gatherings.

The Indian Ministry of Health said in its daily update, that the total number of injured rose to 246 thousand and 628 cases, and the incidence rose sharply, by about 8,000 cases or more per day, for several days so far.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the number of cases in India has now exceeded the number in Spain, which recorded 241,310 cases, and India has become the fifth country with the number of confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Russia and Britain.

The death toll related to the virus in India was 6,929, which is a relatively low outcome compared to countries such as Italy, which are ranked seventh in terms of the total number of infections, but they recorded 33,846 deaths.

Indian officials affirm that more than two months of closure have kept mortality rates low, and have pointed to effective clinical management and less serious injuries in India.

However, experts warned that India, the world's second largest population (1.3 billion people), has not experienced the epidemic yet.
