The Swedish flag day was called the national day of celebration when it was first celebrated in 1916. And it is at best what this year's celebration may consist of: the raising of the flag.

Festivities have been set all over the country in the wake of the Corona crisis. However, the traditional celebration at Skansen in Stockholm will be off - but without the audience. The Swedes are allowed to follow it all through their TV screens at home on the sofa.

That's how the Swedes celebrate today

In Gothenburg, there is usually a big celebration in the Slottsskogen, with a concert by the Gothenburg symphonics and also a citizenship ceremony where the Gothenburg citizens who have become new Swedish citizens are welcomed. But this year, nothing is as usual. The festivities have been canceled, the concert is pre-recorded and can be followed digitally and the citizenship ceremony has been moved to next year.

Also in Malmö the welcome ceremony is postponed, but the rest of the celebration has moved to the net. On the city's Youtube channel, you can hear speeches from, among others, the municipal council chairman and the governor to get in the mood.

The Swedish Institute also holds a digital celebration: A 24-hour live broadcast with greetings from, among others, Crown Princess Victoria and Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. Several artists also contribute concerts.

"Rainy weather"

If you still want to have your own celebration outdoors, you have to bring an umbrella. There is expected to be rain and cooler temperatures of 10-15 degrees in large parts of the country.

- It is rainy weather to wait in almost the whole country. The question is not whether it will rain on National Day, but when, Henrik Reimer, meteorologist at SMHI, told TT during Friday.
