On May 27, 1960, the era of military coups began in the history of the Turkish Republic, and this coup resulted in the execution of the late Prime Minister Adnan Menderes by hanging, along with two of his cabinet ministers. Last week, a series of memorial events were organized to mark the 60th anniversary of this painful anniversary in our history.

You know that this first coup has had a negative impact on our political life. In Turkey, we have become accustomed to receiving a new military coup against the elected governments in nearly every ten years. Even in the absence of coups d'état, the military guardianship of elected governments resembled a right that everyone would agree to.

So the politicians used to ask permission from the army, and they asked him directly before making major decisions, even if the government did not ask the army directly; Before taking any decision, she would have been cautious, and would think a hundred times about the army’s view of its possible actions towards the decision.

The military continued their guardianship of politics, sometimes they intervened in certain cases and spoke directly, and sometimes they expressed their position through statements published in newspapers, titled "a general or military official whose name has not been released."

Today, 60 years after this coup, the tutelage of the army has left no impact on the political scene in Turkey.

Since 2007 - at least - the scene has begun to completely transform, since the Justice and Development Party government responded to the army leadership statement; The army’s leadership has published a statement on the Internet clarifying the conditions that it believes should be met by those who are elected to the post of President of the Turkish Republic, and warned against electing a president who wears his “veil”.

Indeed, the government of the Justice and Development Party, which took power under Recep Tayyip Erdogan's leadership, began - from the first day it came to power - to recognize the people as the army interfered and took control of political life, and began to publicly criticize this intervention.

However, the military's adaptation or acceptance of this new situation was not easy and quick, as they persistently tried to continue their old activities that they are accustomed to, such as maintaining the law of “the ban on headscarves in universities”, and not allowing the improvement and expansion of religious education, for example they were standing An impenetrable dam in the face of expanding the spread of "schools of imams and preachers", as they were evaluating issues such as hijab and religious education in the field of what is called in the Turkish language "backlash" and in the Arabic language "reactionary".

Initially, the military did not face a problem in continuing and maintaining their old habits, because the President of the Republic - then - President Ahmad Necdet Sezer, who was from their same mentality and intellectual orientation.

Therefore, when they published their statement - mentioned above - on the official website of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) on April 27, 2007, they were waiting for the government to comply with the orders and resign immediately, as they had accustomed to with previous governments.

However, an unexpected thing happened, as the Justice and Development Party issued in less than 24 hours a counter statement, declaring that "the army is under the authority and leadership of the government, not the other way around", and the statement reminded the army that it is an institution under the authority of the democratically elected government; And that he has no authority, right or character that authorizes him to interfere in determining who will be the President of the Republic.

It is the island that witnessed the execution of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes. This island located in the Sea of Marmara was closed to the public, but today it was opened to the people’s visit.

In fact, this date (April 27, 2007) was a watershed moment in the history of the Turkish Republic, as the military lost all causes of “legitimate” interference or coup; With a firm reaction he faces for the first time.

Thus, 47 years after the first coup on May 27, 1960, a new era began in the military's relationship with politics in Turkey.

Today, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of this unjust and brutal coup, the issue of coups is being discussed again; Because, on the orders of the President of the Republic, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, special preparations were made on the island of "Yassi", since on May 27 Erdogan opened the "Island of Democracy and Liberties."

Yes, it is the island that witnessed the execution of the late Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and his companions, this island located in the Sea of Marmara and near Istanbul and was closed to the public, but today it was opened to the people’s visit, the courtroom was renovated, and a mosque, hotel, and conference hall were built on the island ; This makes it a very beautiful place for international scientific and political meetings. This aims to consolidate rights and democracy and combat the coup in the consciousness of Turkish society.

Also on the island, the “Museum of Democracy and Liberties” was opened to immortalize Menderes and his companions. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attached great importance to building this museum, and it was agreed to open it on the sixtieth anniversary of the coup, just as it was planned for; Because this museum ensures that this awareness (anti-coup d'etat) is passed on to future generations, and ensures that history is not falsified.

This inauguration of the island on the 60th anniversary of the coup and executions, reminded Turkish society that the putschists were a disgrace in the history of society in Turkey.

Indeed, although Erdogan's position against the military coup was a turning point in 2007, unfortunately he did not completely erase this ideology among coup-crazed people. Just four years ago, the secret military organization linked to Fatah Allah Gulen attempted the coup.

But Turkish society was able to realize its high awareness of the devastating impact of the military coups, and with Erdogan's strong and resolute leadership, and by encouraging them that night, Turkish society was able to repel the attempted coups and thwarted it.

On that night, the resistance of the Turkish nation against this coup set an exceptional example of the democratic movement in world history.

The resistance and courage of the Turkish people that night was more than just defending their rights and democracy, but we can say that that night was a victory for democracy and for people in all the world.

The failure of the Turkish people to this coup - which wanted to spit out its toxins - made Turkey stronger, and the Turkish army was purged from the treacherous treacherous gang that crept into it, and the Turkish army became much stronger than it was before.

Although nearly a third of the army was excluded following the failed military coup attempt, the Turkish army succeeded in implementing Operation Euphrates Shield in northern Syria - after trying to overthrow - and the "Olive Branch" and "Spring of Peace" process was unrivaled.

In a short time, the Turkish army succeeded in registering overwhelming victories over the terrorist organization (PKK) "Kurdistan Workers Party", which the Turkish people suffered from terrorism for fifty years, and this organization remained on the agenda of successive Turkish governments fifty years; With the elimination of the putschists, the Turkish army grew stronger, and the country became much more successful in all respects.

However, all of it; The aspirations of the obsessed coups in Turkey have not been completely fulfilled. In recent times, opposition parties have been reminding the AKP of coups; However, these letters and discussions do not indicate that there is currently any possibility of a military coup in Turkey; On the contrary, Turkey is now at the farthest point of the possibility of a coup in its history.

There were several other coup attempts, but they were not at the hands of the military, but rather by the media or through the use of the right to demonstrate and protest

These letters from the opposition do not mean that there is a possibility, a possibility, or that someone is putting a military coup on their agenda today; Turkey has completely closed the coups, and the military coup has become an ancient history that brings a curse to its managers and invites them to feel shame, and the opposition knows very well that it and its supporters can never afford it, because today Turkey is strong, not ancient Turkey.

But such statements are a shame of them and an embarrassment of their abhorrent history, just as the neo-Nazis in Germany do not embarrass their shameful and shameful history. This undoubtedly disturbs the democrats, and of course the AK Party segments.

However, they have renewed coup dynamics. Because before the failed military coup attempt on July 15, 2016, many other attempts were made, and these attempts were not at the hands of the military, but were by the media, and by exploiting the right to demonstrate and protest (Gazi Square incidents in Istanbul 2013), and by fabricating the charges Prosecution before the judiciary; It also happened on December 17-25, 2013.

So these coups are not like traditional military coups, they are looking for tricks to come to you from ways you never expected, they are like the devil you do not know where it comes from.

However, there is now enough awareness, sensitivity and alertness in Turkey.
