"Mayor de Blasio, open your eyes. The police are out of control." This is the title chosen for the hard editorial of the New York Times on the management of protests in the city by law enforcement agencies; editorial that also attacks the governor of New York State, Andrew Cuomo. In the editorial, a scene of hundreds of peaceful demonstrators violently beaten by the police is told and it is underlined that similar episodes have happened several times in the city, in the last days, as evidenced by the many videos circulating on social networks. "New Yorkers took to the streets to call for an end to police brutality, to express their pain and hope for hearing, and for their rights to be respected. Too often, the police responded with further violence."

"The mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, is responsible for the city's failure to protect the safety of its residents. Despite evidence of police abuse, he looked away, insisting that the police use 'the most light as possible '".

The agents act "in a way that dishonors their mission to protect and serve." "The mayor is allowing this to happen and has fueled tensions by imposing a curfew," the editorial continues. The editorial also criticizes New York State governor Andrew Cuomo, who denied that the police are violently handling peaceful protests: "Open your eyes". The New York Times wonders how it is possible that de Blasio and Cuomo do not have the time to ensure the safety of citizens and respect for their rights, remembering that these problems concern not only New York, but the whole country.
