The European Union will fully reopen its internal borders by the end of June, Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson announced on Friday 5 June. The latter clarified that the lifting of travel restrictions to or from the block will not begin until July.

Speaking to the press after a videoconference between the interior ministers of the 27 member states, Ylva Johansson said that most EU governments would lift border controls between member states by June 15, but that some would nevertheless wait until the end of the month.

"So that means that internal border controls will be lifted by the end of June, I imagine," she added. "We should consider the gradual lifting of restrictions on non-essential travel to the EU in early July."
