The Penly nuclear power station, near Dieppe. - BEAUFILS / SIPA

An incident was declared on May 28th to the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) by the management of the Penly power station, in Petit-Caux (Seine-Maritime). The malfunction of one of the four monitoring sensors at the heart of reactor 1 is at issue in this level 1 incident on a scale of 7, explains  Paris-Normandy this Thursday.

"The repair of the offending detector is underway," said a press release from EDF, which manages the installation.

A faulty detector

It was on May 16 that the failure was noticed during a visit to the facilities. While the reactor power reduction was underway, an intermediate detector displayed measurements different from the other three calculating the variation in reactor power. In a first analysis, the detector was recognized as functional, but a second concluded that it did not work.

“At all times, the other three detectors remained functional, the monitoring of the heart remained effective. However, due to an incorrect initial analysis, management has declared this event, ”said EDF.
