In total, there are close to 2,300 gift cards worth about SEK 1.1 million. The money is taken from the funds set aside for costs due to covid-19.

- The summer gift to the staff is our way of showing appreciation. The staff has been working a lot lately, not just in healthcare. We see that the entire organization has been on its toes, ”says Andreas Sjölander (S), chairman of the local council.

Support to local merchants

But the municipal management not only wants to show appreciation, they also want to support the local traders. Namely, the gift cards that are distributed only apply to the approximately 40 merchants who are affiliated with HERE Handel and Möten AB. The company has the task of promoting trade development in Härnösand. Shops and restaurants that are not connected can do so by contacting the municipality of Härnösand.

Debated to provide support

The Municipality of Härnösand has previously been criticized for supporting private commerce by purchasing itself into the Prism Gallery. The Municipal Act also states that support must not be given to private traders.

- This is first and foremost a gift to the staff. Someone always benefits from giving gifts and in this case it is the trade in Härnösand, says Sjölander.

According to the municipal law, exceptions can be made if the measure is of general interest to the local residents.

- I think this decision is quite uncontroversial for the local residents. We want to show our appreciation, there is a limited number of companies, but we believe that if their liquidity is increased, it can give rings on the water and also benefit other companies, says Sjölander.

Sjölander also promises that the government has recently increased the opportunities for municipalities to give gifts.

The Moderates and the Swedish Democrats turned to the publisher and asked for rejection.
