June 03, 2020 "In these months we have all seen difficult moments, seen our loved ones die, fought with doctors and nurses but today Italy returns to walking alone on its legs". Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said this during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with his French colleague, Jean-Yves Le Drian. "If Italy is rising again, we also owe it to the help of our friends and France is among them," he added.

"Italy - continued Di Maio - has chosen today to reopen its internal economy to reopen its borders, but we expect reciprocity from all other countries". And he explained: "We are committed to opening some closures that we see with some regret on the part of some countries, not France", because "the individualistic approach" damages Europe and the European single market.

The French colleague chose Italy as the first visit to a European country after lockdowon. For Di Maio it is "a choice that represents a further certificate of closeness on the French side". For tourism, Di Maio said, we believe the need for "uniform rules for mobility to guarantee safe and uninterrupted travel" for European citizens.

"I missed Italy and I came as soon as it opened," said Le Drian, at the press conference, recalling the last meeting in Naples on February 27 at the beginning of the pandemic. "From Italy - he added - we learned a lot about pandemic management".
